A quick and dirty Blog post about another one of my favorite cartoonists', that I really didn't get to discover/explore until I went to college in Philadelphia. Oh sure, I grew up watching the Addams Family on TV but never knew it was originally a cartoon that appeared in The New Yorker magazine from the 1950's!
But it wasn't until I discovered a water damaged book in a Philadelphia used book store, for $1.50, that the 'light bulb' went off...and I 'discovered' ANOTHER favorite cartoonist....and had to find out more about him. Back in the 'olden days' that meant digging through piles of vintage magazines and going to the library. You really had to put in some effort to learn about things you were interested in, and a bit of luck. Now, all you need is an internet connection and POW!you're bombarded with all manner of information and images. So if you wanna learn anything about him, check out Wikipedia, ugh, or read a book. I'll share the book that introduced me to him ( I still have it). It's one of the best purchases I made for $1.50...at a time when $1.50 could buy you (7) 25 cent street pretzels...a staple food source for an art student, who was normally spending his money on art supplies, books and comics.
Here's the infamous Addams Family- (I still want to live in a house like theirs.)
Published in 1954 by Simon & Schuster - Original Dust Cover.
My water damaged book that I purchased for $1.50 had no Dust Cover ...but DOES still smell as if it came straight from their house.
My favorite page in this book, it still puts a smile on my face and makes me giggle like a complete moron.
The original Painting/Image for the Homebodies Cover
A fantastic book about the life of Charles Addams, I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorites.
A collection of other books in my 'library' of Charles Addams' work...I'm a bit of a fan.
Uncle Fester Mask from the Addams Family made in 1965 for Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
